Green Keys Recognition for P.A.P Corp. Hotels
The Green Key National Committee has awarded all four of the P.A.P Corp. hotels (Astoria Hotel in Thessaloniki, Alexander the Great Beach Hotel in Kryopigi, Agionissi Resort in Amoliani and Xenia Hotel in Ouranoupoli) with the Green Key recognition for the hotels’ environmental initiatives. A total of 37 hotels in Greece have been awarded the Green Key label.
For years, the P.A.P Corp. hotels have consistently met the Green Key program’s criteria, such as environmental training, energy and waste management, water conservation, use of eco-friendly products, and use of natural areas as gardens. The recently renovated Astoria hotel in Thessaloniki uses its own sources of energy and electricity, and is the only city hotel in Greece that holds a Green Key, setting an example of model environmental management practices.
Green Keys is part of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), a non-governmental organization working towards sustainable development through environmental education. In addition to the Green Key program, FEE offers programs such as the Blue Flag, Eco-Schools and Young Reporters for the Environment.
HOTELIA, the Hotel & Restaurant Management School of P.A.P Corp.
HOTELIA Hotel & Restaurant Management School is a member of the P.A.P Corp family, and actively participates in various environmental and community initiatives along with the P.A.P Corp. hotels.
- Volunteer tree planting: HOTELIA staff and students, together with local school children, helped reforest the St. Dimitrios area in Kassandra peninsula, which was devastated by the 2007 forest fire.
- Knowledge sharing: HOTELIA was an integral part of the study conducted in 2008 in order to offer information on environmental management in the tourism sector. The study, published in all the Mediterranean languages, is available at the HOTELIA Library, as well as the Environmental Libraries in the P.A.P Corp hotels.
Changing Swimmers’ Habits
As part of its effort to contribute to a cleaner environment, the hospitality family of P.A.P Corp actively participates in the new the “Changing Habits” initiatives by the local environmental organization Ellada Kathari (“Clean Up Greece”). This Changing Habits program aims to educate the public about the environmental damage caused by irresponsible smoking habits (e.g. not disposing of cigarette ends properly).
The pollution from waste produced by cigarette smokers negatively impact the destinations, and the Clean Up Greece activities help ensure all guests can enjoy clean hotels and beaches and a healthy environment. The P.A.P Corp family hotels engage management, employees and interested guests in environmental activities. Information booklets about proper smoking manners and special pocket sized ashtrays are provided for the visitors at these hotels.
